Pacifier
Digital prints mounted on MDF
(Series of 9), 50cm x 70cm, 2014
Pacifier considers consumption – particularly to achieve an ideal body – as a form of distraction. Sexualisation and infantilisation are implied by the sweets, sex toys and nail art practice dummies. Faux wallpapers and wrapping papers suggest textures and qualities, implying illusion and superficiality. I made them as vignettes so they resembled portraits but they ended up looking more like the beheaded trophies of a hunter.
Pacifier (2014) was displayed in a billboard Cardiff just before Christmas. At this time the imperative to indulge is heightened, we are encouraged to spend money and worry about the consequences later. We are also expected to dress up for the occasion. Perhaps we are preyed upon.
